And yes, my closet is segragated...RTW on the left side and Handmade on the right.
Everyday I wear clothes that I made personally and it feels great. I have so many intresets and moods and images that I am in love with....and they are all there on the right side of my closet!
Monsters!!!
SKULLS!
Dames!!!!
UBER GIRLIE PRINTS!
THE GOTHIC!
THE QUIRKY!
Every DAY I am able to express my feeling dujor! And babies, I JUST CANNOT GO BACK to all RTW clothes. I tell you- IT does NOT feel right! It feels like I crawled into someone else's skin! Which is ok for a Rob Zombie movie; but not ok for moi!
How has sewing made you feel about wearing off the rack clothes? Or maybe if you do not sew; you can realate to wearing mostly vintage or non-mainstream clothing designs, perhaps??

There's NOTHING better than handmade! Congratulations on winning my joint giveaway with J&O Fabrics ~ yay! I'm working on sewing your prize this week and should have it in the mail to you soon. Question though...do you want the flat iron case or would you rather have and apron or shower cap? Let me know ~ either way I'll make it fabulous for you!

It used to be the only RTW I wore was on jeans and t-shirt days. I've been slowly building up my handmade t-shirt collection. The only RTW I wear now are jeans. I've tried to make jeans but found it not worth the effort. All those rivets and topstitched pockets are a PITA. There are some occasions that just call for jeans.
I with Andrea- I've started only really buying jeans. I don't know if thrifted stuff counts as RTW since I reconstruct all of it, but I'll tell you a truth.
I know how you feel about feeling like you've crawled into someone else's skin. I recently went to a wedding and dressed all normal and I was SO uncomfortable! Give me my recons anyday over normal office attire, old navy crap or off the rack shit.
Amor, all your monster creations are amazing. could you be my wardrobe stylist? I know I wouldnt feel right with out my vintage inspired clothes.
The second one is my all time favorite!
Your creations are freaking wonderful, off the peg wouldn't even come close to your makes.
I'm the same with vintage, I don't think I own more than a couple of modern things, they just feel wrong. x
I've yet to make my own clothes. I have bought two patterns but haven't even busted them out! Your blog has inspired me to take this week to try two of the shirt patterns I got. :)
God, your dresses are just amazing.
For me, while I don't sew, almost every single thing in my wardrobe is a thrifted item (vintage and non-vintage). I do feel weird going to "regular" stores to look for shoes or clothes. I feel much more at home in thrift stores.
What amazes me is how badly RTW fits (I wrote batly originally, ha). I have a body that is fairly easy to fit with patterns and almost impossible to fit in the store unless we're talking stretch fabric. It's bizarre to me how anybody fits into these clothes.
I definitely still buy and wear RTW, but I am very particular about how well an item is made and the cost.
You have a really good taste chosing fabrics and making them best making your own clothes.
I understand you feel them as your own skin! Your own beatiful skin!
I forgot to add:
I won a $25 gift certificate to the Steamy Kitchen Shop...but they don't ship to Canada. I'm giving it away on my blog:

i havent been feeling well this week so i have been barely peeling myself out of bed in time to get to work, no time to pretty up. so ive been throwing on regular rtw slacks and shirts and i feel even more blah! i no longer feel like me when it is not something i made. its making me feel like i look even more tired and sickly. my smile is brightest when i am in my very own =D
As a non-sewer I am so envious of your beautiful creations! I wish I could sew but have yet to master that art. I do a lot of reconstructions and add on things of my own design, like embroidery or brooches. Anyway, I love your style and am inspired everytime I read your blog!
Oh you are so amazingly talented, love! I just adore all of your beautiful frocks - especially the pink ruffles and the Frankenstein's monster. And your hair is always rockin'.
I have a few non-vintage items all op shopped) but I feel weird if I don't have at least some vintage on. My best outfits are ALL vintage... And one day I might even learn to sew !!!

I am totally in awe of your creations - just fabulous! I wish i could make clothes like this, being a rockabilly chick this is right up my street. Found ypour blog through the beautiful La Dama and now you newest follower. Scarlett x
I don't sew from scratch, but I thrift and pick clothes in my own strange way. There is definitely a difference between clothes I love and clothes I have to wear (for example for work/DIY etc') and of course I always feel better in stuff I've chosen whether thrifted, hand-made (for me, only a couple of bits LOL) or new.
The quirkies must be my FAVORITES. Plus I love that new pinafore to.. yeah to death. And your new hair. Poppin.
Your productivity blows me away. So many beautiful, well-fitted dresses. A real signature style and I love the perfect match of hair and make-up.
I'm still a beginner sewist, and the fabrics available where I live are limited, so I can't completely jettison RTW. But I'm making it a point to buy less RTW, esp. at retail prices (thrifting is a different beast).
Where do you get the fabric from, ahhhhhhhhhh so wonderful and inspiring.

I found your amazing blog via a google search for 'plus size retro and vintage sewing patterns.' I didn't really find any, but this blog is a great find! I've always been non mainstream in my clothing tastes, anything from goth to hippie to vintage. I haven't sewed for a while (back problems) and I'm only a basic sewer, but I'm so inspired to start making my own clothes now! :-)
Oh my god what an amazing post!!! You've treated me to some utterly drool-worthy frocks that have my fingers itching to top up my bobbin thread ... I've been uninspired to sew lately, but now that we're coming into summer here in Oz, I have started thrifting some fabrics to make into light cotton frocks - I hate buying summer clothes and buy second hand 99% of the time anyway. You've inspired me! xoxo
