It has a square neckline and is sleeveless, so it needs facings.
You can Create your own facings from the pattern piece. Here are some photos on how I do this using this bodice. Easy!
How far down to make the facings... My rule if thumb is stop above the bust line. This one is about 3 inches below the neckline. Draw an arc to the mid shoulder line. This one could go a little lower because you can see after it's stitched and turned it will be narrow right at the corner.
Happy Sewing!

oh very cool! I really like this :)

Have been missing you on youtube and had to seek you out and see you've been busy this year, well hope to see more of you (your video's helped me alot). I'm a curvy girl to and you helped me sew the vintage things I love but always thought too dainty for me. God bless 2014 for you and yours may His favor shine on all that you do. P.S. more video's pls if time allows....I need more 1940's fashion in my life lol!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog. Wonderful! I am not a curvy girl, but my bustline gets in the way of wearing standard patterns without altering them, so you have taught me a great deal about willing the paper pattern to my ways. But what I want to say mostly is how inspiring your clothing is in terms of color, contrast and sheer imagination. My sewing gurus over the years have all been about drape-drape-drape...but it is not easy to find drapey fabrics that are also fun and interesting. So, thanks to you, I worry not so much about that and go more for what is bright and comic and more in line with my personality. Loving your tutorials. Sewing is as much about problem solving as it is about creativity. Thanks for a great, great resource and well of inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI just found you tonight through youtube. What wonderful information you have shared for those of us who were uncertain how to make a sloper work for us in resizing vintage patterns. I sure hope that we will hear/see more from you.
ReplyDeleteHi Suzanne. I am trying to get back into sewing after a couple of decades, when I used to sew for my little kids. Well, okay, its been 3 or 4 decades! I ordered the McCalls sloper pattern and realized I made the rookie mistake of ordering my dress size (22) instead of by my measurements, which I think comes out to a size 30 in that pattern. Should I try to use the size 22 and add to it, or should I order a new pattern in the correct size? Also, have you found some places to get better deals on fabric (online or stores?). Joann, Hancock, Walmart?), Where can I get the best prices on table size cutting boards, those little plastic grid cutting boards and curved ruler thingies for drafting patterns, and good prices on patterns? I look forward to everything you post. God bless you and yours real good. You are a GREAT teacher and I love your personality! You also helped thisplus-size grandma to realize she doesn't have to be dowdy and can rock the styles she prefers just by making them FIT and not be dumpy.I too love the 1940s/1950s looks and have been trying to perfect my victory rolls. <3
ReplyDeleteHave you stopped blogging and YouTube -ing? God I hope not! I just started becoming one of your stalkers!!!! I love you! I'm a plus size musician also. I got a sewing machine for Xmas and have been nervous about sewing my own clothes (sick of looking frumpy) then I recently found your YouTube videos and now I'm inspired by you! There is a post you put up in craftster (I believe in 2010) you showed off a top that you made. It was pink/black skull fabric. The pattern is McCall's m5640. I have this pattern and I'm scared to begin! I can't afford to spend money on fabric that I might possibly ruin in the end. I've searched everywhere for a tutorial on this pattern and can't find one. I was hoping you might want to do one???? Your so inspiring. Love the dress form you created!
ReplyDeleteHoping you'll come back to blogging! :-)
